Don't let the thick spine fool you, it's a quick, easy read. I devoured it in about 3 sittings. Despite the verse format it flows nicely, there were times i forgot about the wonky format and read it like a novel.
I'm not sure I like the portrayal of mormons. It's just the life on one family. I'm not saying there aren't people like this sitting in sacrament meeting, just that they're the exception. I don't know if the author was ever mormon, my guess is not, but the portrayal of mormons was fairly accurate, if from a different perspective than a completely faithful one.
