Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

I'll admit I was ignorant about apartheid. I guess I thought it was like Jim Crow so I didn't feel the need to look into it. Trevor Noah explained it in a way that I got it, all while giving me a laugh. So the fact that I got to laugh and learn something makes this a 5 star.

It's not told chronologically. Rather, he chose to do it by topic. It was like he did an outline and filled in the details as he went. It was confusing at times, but the change of outline was refreshing.

The Abbot's Tale by Conn Iggulden

The Abbot's TaleThe Abbot's Tale by Conn Iggulden
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I would normally give a book like this a rating of 3 or 3.5. There were moments when I was just reading to read and not because I was enjoying it. I don't even remember these parts. Dunstan talked a lot about his work and that was a bore.

I found the language incredibly beautiful though. Dunstan is basically writing an autobiography. He writes with the dignity of a man late in his years looking back at his life. However, there are moments when this dignity is dropped and you can tell he is reliving the moment. Particularly when he is talking about his adolescent urges and the battle.

It was slightly more readable than I thought it would be. It started off as a blog post and it kept the blog post feel to it. I feel like I should have been taking notes for some chapters as I didn't absorb any of the information. I didn't learn anythig new from it but I can see some people benefiting from reading it.
